Stu Ungar

Stuart Errol Ungar (September 8, 1953 – November 22, 1998) was an American professional poker player from New York City, raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He won five World Series of Poker bracelets, including three Main Event titles in 1980, 1981, and 1997 — the only player in history to win the WSOP Main Event three times. The bulk of his career predated comprehensive tournament earnings tracking, so a complete lifetime live total is not available. He was inducted posthumously into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2001. Prior to his poker career, Ungar was regarded as one of the premier gin rummy players in the United States, dominating high-stakes gin games in New York from an early age.
